Recommendation: Very Good. A classic American restaurant with a beautiful dining room, this restaurant is a great choice for a pre-theatre meal or a romantic night out in St. Paul.

Located in the historic and charming St. Paul hotel, the St. Paul Grill is a beautiful restaurant serving classic American dishes such as Steaks, Chops, and Seafood. In the winter, ask to be seated at a table over-looking Rice Park and your eyes will be delighted with the twinkling of holiday lights and other winter festivities in the park. The view outside along with the dark woods and warm lighting inside, make this a great place for a date or pre-theatre meal (The Ordway is across the street from the restaurant and Xcel Energy Center is a block away). The dining room itself is simple yet elegant. There are booths with frosted glass tops for privacy, and the long elegant bar is a twinkling beauty. We went on a Tuesday night and the place was packed, with primarily hotel guests we assume.

Although the wine list was large with great options for both by the glass and bottles, it was weighted towards Californian wines. For starters, the Roasted Beet Salad ($10) was delicious. Roasted Golden Beets and greens tossed in a Hazelnut Vinaigrette along with creamy Goat cheese and dried cranberries. For entrees, our server recommended the Beef Tenderloin ($32) which was served with mashed potatoes and a nice sauce. The Tenderloin, served medium rare was juicy and the sauce was excellent. Unfortunately, we didn’t have the same experience with the Filet Mignon ($36). We ordered it medium but the outside and sides were a little charred and the steak wasn’t cooked consistently in addition to it being bland and dry. Desserts were good…the Apple Crisp ($7) was classic Steakhouse style, large enough to feed at least 4-5 people. The Turtle Tart ($6.50) had a Cinnamon Pecan Butter Crust with a Chocolate Truffle filling.

$$$$. Valet parking available. There are also several Parking ramps nearby.
