Recommendation: Very good. This dive bar is one of the best burger and fries joints in the Twin Cities.

Matt’s Bar is a small neighborhood dive bar which has served great burgers for decades. The place is small and usually pretty crowded. There are about 10-15 tables and also some bar seating – the furniture is old and not very comfortable. The décor here is minimalist consisting of a few pictures and award plaques. You can smell and feel the grease the moment you enter this joint. You will want to leave this place from the moment you get in! Don’t worry – this is all a part of the charm of Matt’s Bar.

There are only a couple of people working at this restaurant and service is usually quick but during busy times it’s hard to get the servers’ attention if you need something additional. The menu is small (basically restricted to burgers, fries, and beverages, including beer). The Juicy Lucy is the reason patrons flock to this place. A burger, with the cheese placed in the center of the meat patty is the house specialty. You can also order it with grilled onions, something we recommend. When served, make sure you let it cool down – even when cool be careful with your first bite because the hot cheese that oozes out is liable to burn your tongue (and fingers). The fries are thin and crisp – they usually lack salt, but after you season them right, you’ll be hard pressed to stop eating them. The regular Cheeseburger or Hamburger is nothing special.

Burger and Fries run about $10. They only accept cash.

I know it's popular. I know it's reputed to have the best burgers in town. I know they are believed to have started the famous Jucy Lucy burger. I don't care. The burgers and fries are average at best and in my opinion don't even compare to a Sonic burger and McDonalds fries. Overrated by the general population and by this blog.

Juicy Lucy is good, not great. Everything else is poor.

Matt's Has been and will continue to serve a great purpose in our community. Theyt never claimed to be anything but a corner place to eat and drink. Just happens to have a good burger at a fair price. That is it. On a side note anonymous # 1 what have you done with your culinary gifts and or wisdom sound like gen X and that comment about Mc Donalds clearly a fast food kind of taste and ecumin

Matt's clearly found their target market! Anonymous 3 clearly has the sophistication and culinary "ecumin" to appreciate the mediocre! You go boy!!

Really.... Randy; you are the one with the lofty taste and extreme standard for $3.65 burger. at a corner dive I think #3 has it correct it it what it is.... a burger. Keep eating those chain company foods and you will not have to worry about local independents. Wow... this is fun.
