Food: 7
Service: 6
Ambience: 9
Recommendation: Very Good. We have had varied experiences at this restaurant but they offer some great food selections and the location and décor is fabulous!
Chiang Mai Thai is located in Calhoun Square in Uptown and serves authentic Thai cuisine. Being in the heart of Uptown you expect the ambience at the restaurant to mimic its surroundings and the eclectic décor balances the classic and the modern very well and reminds us of our time in Thailand. The front bar area is traditional with high top chairs, while the lounge in the rear of the restaurant is where you can really relax. The exotic drinks are a mixed bag and both the Chiang Mai Thai and Thai-garita are very unpredictable…the last time Nick was there, the Chiang Mai Thai was watery and to make things worse, the bartender showed attitude. They have a nice selection of beer so you can always stick to the brew.
The food selection is vast and both the Satay and the Burnings Wings of Fire are good appetizers. The Green Papaya Salad is one of our favorite Thai dishes and this restaurant does it well…you can taste the freshness when you bite into the crunchy green Papaya. A dish we would recommend over all others here is the Khao Cadeukadeek (Beef Tenderloin served with Tomato Rice, Hoisin Sauce, and Sriracha). We have had this multiple times and it is consistently superb – the beef is moist, the tomato rice flavorful and the combination of the sweet and hot sauces is deadly. You can also choose from the normal selection of curries found at most Thai restaurants. The Sticky Rice with Mango is good, but the mango isn’t consistently sweet. We’ve had mixed reviews on the service based on our several visits. Overall, a very good restaurant that would move up in our opinion if it were more consistent.
