Recommendation: Very good. A neighborhood café that offers some of the best dessert in the Twin Cities.
When you mention the restaurant Café Latte, most people instinctively think of desserts…and for good reason. However this neighborhood café has more to offer than just sweet sensations. This Twin Cities institution, in the midst of a busy stretch of Grand Ave, offers you a wide array of choices including prepared and made to order salads, sandwiches, soups, and pizzas. However, be prepared to stand in long “cafeteria-style” lines and wait for tables as this place does tend to get busy. But once you do get a table, the large glass windows offer good people-watching.
We’ve never had a chance to taste their pizza but we are intimately familiar with the offerings of their cafeteria as well as dessert bar. Their prepared salad selection changes often and the salad sampler is the way to go – we highly recommend their Chicken Pasta Salad. Their deli-style sandwiches are prepared to order and they have a nice selection of breads to choose from. You can always find a nice soup to go with your meal.
Their desserts are what we have come to appreciate most over the years. The Turtle Cake is the best chocolate cake we have ever eaten…period. This multi-layer chocolate cake with fudge and caramel toppings and giant pecans is sweet, moist, and decadent. A large slice of this cake with a latte makes for a special meal. Their Tres Leches, or three milk cake is incredibly soft and moist - the combination of sweetened condensed, cream, and whole milk gives this cake its unique flavor profile. They offer a nice German Chocolate Cake as well as a selection of Cheesecakes.
Cafeteria style selection ranging from $5-$15.![]()

A cool place in a cool neighborhood. I've eaten there a number of times and each time have had their salad combination (choose three salads). Always delicious, always reasonable--always for lunch!
This has been one of my favorite weekend lunch places for years. Their spread sampler (a scoop each of three different spreads with a sliced mini-baguette and sandwich fixings) is always a good choice and the have an interesting variety of salads and soups. Also quite a few options for vegetarians.
Personally think the food is above average, but nothing to write home about.
The Turtle Cake, however, is orgasmic.
Great locale and people-watching.
